If one skims a report of Wednesday’s “American Idol” results show, learning that Matt Giraud was eliminated, he probably would not be seriously shocked. But the results show was hardly textbook.
For the first time this season, Adam Lambert, who most consider one of the biggest frontrunners ever on the show, landed in the bottom three. In fact, it was revealed during the course of the program that he was actually in the bottom two.
Using a results format usually utilized for the top seven results, host Ryan Seacrest broke four of the contestants into two groups; Kris Allen and Matt Giraud were in one, while Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey were in the other. He then advised Adam to pick the group in which he belongs.
Believing himself to be safe, Lambert drifted to the Iraheta-Gokey collective. While he was right about which group included the top two vote-getters, he was incorrect about his own standing. Lambert joined Allen and Giraud in the bottom three.
As for Giraud, while his rendition of “My Funny Valentine” did receive a “brilliant” comment from Simon Cowell, his fanbase was clearly the smallest. Giraud only entered the top thirteen as a wildcard selection, and he would have been eliminated, if not for the judges’ save, during the first of two Top 7 nights.
The contestants return to sing rock songs, reportedly under mentor Slash, next week.
